EYWEP at the heart of empowering young people and women in the ECOWAS region
In a regional context characterised by high levels of unemployment and underemployment, particularly amongst young people and women, the EYWEP (ECOWAS Youth and Women Entrepreneurship Programme) stands out as a strategic and transformative response to the socio-economic challenges facing ECOWAS countries. This initiative forms part of a drive for sustainable transformation aimed at fully harnessing the region’s human potential, whilst promoting inclusive and equitable growth.
Indeed, young people and women make up a significant proportion of West Africa’s population. However, despite this considerable demographic potential, many young people and women face difficulties in accessing employment, often due to a mismatch between the skills they have acquired and the needs of the labour market. Added to this are the specific barriers faced by women, notably inequalities in access to resources, training and economic opportunities. It is against this backdrop that the EYWEP project intervenes, adopting an integrated and pragmatic approach.
One of the project’s key pillars is skills development. By strengthening skills tailored to local and regional economic realities, EYWEP enables beneficiaries to acquire technical and practical skills in promising sectors. These training programmes are designed to meet the demands of the labour market, whilst promoting the employability and competitiveness of young people and women. Furthermore, the integration of cross-cutting skills such as leadership, project management and digital skills further strengthens their ability to secure long-term integration into the world of work.
At the same time, the programme places a central focus on promoting entrepreneurship. Recognising that the private sector and individual initiatives are key drivers of job creation, EYWEP supports young people and women in setting up and developing their own businesses. This support takes the form of financial assistance, as well as mentoring and monitoring schemes. As a result, beneficiaries are better equipped to turn their ideas into viable, income-generating projects.
Beyond the economic aspects, the EYWEP project also helps to reduce gender inequalities. By promoting equal access to opportunities, it helps to empower women and enable their full participation in socio-economic development. This inclusive approach not only strengthens social cohesion but also increases the overall impact of the actions undertaken.
Finally, EYWEP plays a key role in developing the region’s human capital. By investing in skills, supporting innovation and facilitating access to employment, the programme helps to build a more resilient and dynamic economy. It thus serves as a major driver for tackling the challenges of unemployment and underemployment, whilst opening up new prospects for future generations.
The EYWEP project is not merely a support initiative; it is a genuine driver of social and economic transformation within the ECOWAS region. Through its comprehensive approach and concrete actions, it empowers young people and women to become key players in the development of their communities and their countries.
