Why is ECOWAS investing in youth and women’s entrepreneurship?
West Africa has one of the youngest populations in the world. Every year, millions of young people enter the labour market, whilst job opportunities remain insufficient. Women, for their part, continue to face numerous obstacles in setting up and developing their businesses.
Recognising this reality, ECOWAS has made entrepreneurship a strategic priority. By supporting young people and women, the organisation aims to stimulate innovation, foster the growth of SMEs, reduce poverty and strengthen the economic resilience of member states.
The EYWEP Programme is a concrete response to these challenges. It goes beyond simply funding projects: it supports entrepreneurs at every stage of their journey, from the initial business idea through to expansion into national and regional markets.
By investing in the entrepreneurial potential of its young people, ECOWAS is also paving the way for a more competitive, inclusive and innovation-driven regional economy.
